Thank you for making portraits for children in Puerto Rico!
We know that many teachers use the Portrait Program as a chance to teach their students about the lives and culture of the children for whom they create portraits. Feel free to use the following resources to guide your discussions.
Puerto Rico’s culture is rich and vibrant, and its people are known for their caring and warmth. However, Puerto Rico has also faced many economic challenges over the past decades. Lack of adequate funding has forced many schools to close, and the percentage of elementary students who qualify for free and reduced lunch is around 90%. Those challenges were already present on the island before Hurricanes Irma and Maria unleashed total destruction in September 2017. In May 2018 we delivered portraits to children around the island and there were many more who wanted to participate. We told them we would find artists to make their portraits too, and we are very grateful for your help!
